Coat type, skin condition, activity level, and even the season all play a role in how often your dog should be bathed. Here's what our groomers actually recommend, breed by breed and situation by situation.

The General Rule of Thumb

For most dogs, a bath every four to six weeks strikes the right balance. This keeps their coat clean and their skin healthy without stripping away the natural oils that protect their skin and keep their coat shiny.

It Depends on Coat Type

• Short, smooth coats (think Labradors, Beagles, Boxers) can typically go six to eight weeks between baths. Their coats shed dirt easily and don't trap moisture the way longer coats do.
• Double coats (Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds) benefit from baths every four to six weeks, paired with regular brushing to manage the undercoat and reduce shedding.
• Curly and wiry coats (Poodles, Doodles, terriers) often need more frequent maintenance, sometimes every three to four weeks, since these coats mat easily and trap dirt and oils close to the skin.
• Hairless or very short-haired breeds may need more frequent bathing since they have less natural protection, but always with gentle, breed-appropriate products.

Signs Your Dog Needs a Bath Sooner Than Planned

Trust your nose and your hands here. If your dog has a noticeable odor, greasy or dull-looking fur, visible dirt, or has been rolling in something they shouldn't have, it's time for a bath regardless of where they fall in the usual schedule.

Signs You Might Be Overdoing It

Dry, flaky skin, a dull coat, or excessive itching can actually be signs of overbathing rather than underbathing. Bathing too frequently strips natural oils and can leave your dog's skin more irritated, not less.

 What About Between Baths?

Regular brushing does a lot of heavy lifting between grooming appointments. It removes loose fur, distributes natural oils, and helps you catch mats, hot spots, or skin issues early. For most dogs, a few minutes of brushing a couple times a week keeps them looking and feeling their best between visits.
